Techniques for Photographing Hummingbirds Beautifully
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Instructors: Lisa Langell & Kim Gray
Price: $30 for Boyce Thompson Arboretum (BTA) Members / $40 for non-members
(+ small ticket processing & handling fee)

During this 3-hour class from 8-11am, learn about using manual exposure settings to capture hummingbird images beautfully. You'll need a camera with a lens that offers magnification/zoom, but we will show you how to capture images of them in both natural light and with special flash setups (provided).

This session is part-lecture and part-field work. You will be provided with instruction on how to improve your nature photography in general, plus specific focus will be provided on hummingbird photography.

Gear to bring/have:

• Required: A camera that allows you to switch to Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, set ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture. Most DSLR and many (though not all) compact cameras offer these features.
• A DSLR Camera that also allows for a "hot shoe" mount for flash, and a lens that is somewhere between at least 70-200 or offers a shooting range within those parameters. If you have a lens with greater magnification (e.g., 300mm, 400mm, etc.) please also bring it, but bring a 70-200 or similar.
•If you do not have the above equipment, please bring a Compact Flash and/or a SDHC card. You will insert it into a camera station outfitted with all the proper gear, ready and set up for you.
• Ensure your batteries for your gear are charged and a clear memory card installed
• Comfortable clothing/shoes for sitting/walking
• Snacks/beverages as needed
• Paper/pen or other tools for taking notes
• Tripod
