Technical Deep Dive: San Francisco Climate Action Plan
Event Information
About this event
The City and County of San Francisco is updating its Climate Action Plan (the Plan). After several years of development through technical analysis and stakeholder engagement, the updated Plan is set to be released in Summer 2021.
This webinar will provide details on the primary sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in San Francisco–buildings and transportation–while also addressing how the City aims to put climate justice at the center of the updated Climate Action Plan.
Hear from staff at the San Francisco Department of the Environment, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, and supporting consultants who worked on the technical analyses and tools that helped shape the Climate Action Plan. These tools were used to detail a path for achieving emission reductions in the buildings and transportation sectors while advancing racial equity and quantifying the community “co-benefits” of climate action.

Agenda Details
Setting Science-Based Targets: This presentation will review San Francisco’s protocols for creating the annual GHG inventory and the methodological approaches for setting targets in line with a 1.5 C world.
Projecting GHG Reductions in the “Building Operations” Sector: Department of the Environment staff will present key assumptions, data inputs, and the general modeling approach for estimating GHG emission reductions from proposed strategies and supporting actions for existing and new buildings.
Projecting GHG Reductions in the “Transportation & Land Use” Sector: Representatives from the San Francisco County Transportation Authority and Cambridge Systematics will present key assumptions, data inputs, and the general modeling approach for estimating GHG emission reductions from proposed strategies and supporting actions.
Racial & Social Equity Assessment Tool: Department of the Environment staff will provide an overview of the Racial and Social Equity Assessment Tool (R-SEAT) that was developed and used to assess all draft strategies for their potential to advance racial and social equity.
Community Co-benefits Analysis: Working with the Department of the Environment, Arup Consulting identified and modeled a subset of actions that will generate positive impacts to the economy and public health, and estimated their cumulative “value” in US dollars.
