Description

Hey middle schoolers - want to find out about the world of computers and information technology? Learn, share, collaborate, and explore cutting-edge software and web-based tools. There will be workshops and hands-on activities offered, and the program is designed for maximum engagement.

TECH NIGHT ACTIVITY / WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:

1. Women from UMaine's Association for Computing Machinery Women's Chapter will have three small workshop stations set up and will be introducing programming using Scratch, Arduino programming and circuitry, and Unity video game programming. Participants do not need experience in any of these, but if they already have experience in one, they may choose to spend more time at the other two stations.

2. What is Cyber Security? - Presentation by Bridget Stuart and Leah Dorman on how cyber security affects society; how to be cyber secure; includes question/answer with small prizes.

3. Code.org’s Dani McAvoy will present a hands-on Computer Science Discoveries lesson featuring Circuit Playgrounds.

4. Come plug in and get connected! Maine 4-H has a number of different resources available: take a virtual field trip with Google Cardboard and Google Expeditions, do some coding, build a wearable fitness tracker, and more! Learn about opportunities in your community, or just come hang out and play with cool tech!

5. UMaine’s RiSE Center will conduct introductory workshops on 3D printing basics.

6. Maine Computer Science Teachers Association’s Laura Johns will present a workshop titled “Using Edison Robots to Learn” – She will set up a few stations (4-5) with challenges using Edison Robots. She will also have some handouts about Edison Robots and Maine CSTA.
