Born in April 2013, Tech Meets Conservation is an initiative out of the iHub aimed at getting techies to look beyond their screens and forward to a greener, more sustainable present and future. Consisting of a small community of environmentalists and technologists alike, dubbed Geeks in Gumboots (GiGs), we seek to shine a spotlight on environmental concerns and get techies working to solve them. After being under the radar for a while now, we intend to make a memorable return.
Next Thursday, 12th June 2014 from 6:30-7:30PM, we shall have our first monthly meetup (6th since inception) of 2014 at iHub on the 4th Floor of Bishop Magua Centre. This interactive session, themed On The Ground, will give attendees a chance to discuss some of the real problems that our conservationists face in their line of work. To guide the discussion, I shall give a brief presentation highlighting a recent trip to Tsavo, where we got to hear some of the many challenges the men and women trying to protect our natural heritage face in their line of work.
Technology has a huge role to play in problem-solving. It has worked in a number of other fields, and the GiGs believe it can work for conservation as well. Come one, come all, tag a friend along, and see you on Thursday at 6:30PM.
