About the Presenters

Patrick Bosek

Director of Customer Success Jorsek LLC makers of easyDITA

Release notes are a crucial part of customer communication for product companies. It seems too many organizations either do the bare minimum and hope no one notices or simply accept an inefficient and expensive process. Patrick Bosek will discuss what they've been working on at Jorsek to improve their release notes process for easyDITA and the big improvements they've made. This session will take you through the process, tools, and results for their release notes.

Patrick is a co-founder of Jorsek LLC, makers easyDITA. Since beginning with Jorsek LLC in 2005 Patrick, has worked on a wide range of projects all focused on improving authoring, production, and distribution of content. Most recently, his primary focus has been empowering the users of easyDITA and generally advancing the product documentation industry.

Charles Campbell

Manager, Instructional Technology Solutions New York Power Authority

At some point in your career, you may be required to give a presentation to a live audience. Whether your presentation includes visual slides such as PowerPoint or not, you might want to provide printed handouts to your audience.

In this presentation, Chuck Campbell will discuss suggested “best practices” for handouts from presentation experts, then introduce a new approach to creating printed handouts that will engage the audience in your presentation and provide handouts that they will actually use. He will also demonstrate how to create better presentation handouts directly from PowerPoint WITHOUT using the built-in default handouts.

Chuck Campbell has created and delivered numerous technical presentations over the past 25 years to small and large clients, including the U.S. Navy, United States Postal Service, FedEx Express, Cargill, U.S. Department of Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Norwich Pharmaceuticals, and the New York Power Authority.

Chuck’s passion is learning and mastering new technologies, then teaching those technologies to others. He is always looking for new ways to engage learners, including eLearning, gamification, and other training methods and technologies.

Bobbi Werner

Lead Technical Writer Welch Allyn

Laurie Fiaretti

Technical Illustrator Welch Allyn

Kenneth Reid

Senior Technical Writer Welch Allyn

Laurie Fiaretti, Kenneth Reid, and Bobbi Werner will talk about their award-winning, wordless instructions. To reduce the cost of translation, Welch Allyn relies as much as possible on wordless instructions to communicate assembly and startup instructions for much of their medical equipment. Occasionally, during user testing of their instructions, they discover details that demand minimal text in the form of callouts or even short paragraphs of instructions when the risk of injury or damage to the equipment is high. They will highlight recent examples of (almost) wordless instructions, including two which won Distinguished Technical Communication awards in the International Summit Awards competition.

Bobbi Werner is Lead Technical Writer at Welch Allyn, where she has worked for 10 years documenting medical devices. She is Immediate Past President of STC Rochester, Treasurer and Program Manager of STC Central New York, Writing and Communication Track Manager for Summit 2018, and Awards Manager for the Regional Technical Communication Competition. Earlier this year she was inducted as an STC Associate Fellow.

Laurie Fiaretti is Senior Technical Illustrator at Welch Allyn. She has over 15 years experience in illustration for industries ranging from consumer products and medical devices to military equipment. She is STC Rochester's Employment Manager.

Ken Reid is a Senior Technical Writer at Welch Allyn, where he has been providing user documentation for medical devices since 2006. He received his MS in Technical Communication Management from Mercer University in 2015. In 2016, Ken was an integral member of a R&D team that received the company’s most prestigious award from the CEO.

John Freiberger Technical Writer Lenel

John Freiberger will present on developing functional art (aka infographics) that focus on a scientific or technical topic. He will discuss a piece he developed that focuses on concussions in sports. This project required several related skills, including research, information synthesis/design, graphics design, and usability testing. He will talk about the process he learned to develop this piece, walk through the design iterations, and show the final product.

John has been a technical writer for 20 years, all for companies in the Rochester area. Prior to that, he was certified to teach English, grades 7-12. John is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in the Information Design & Technology (IDT) program at SUNY Polytechnic Institute with anticipated completion in Spring 2018. In his spare time, John enjoys being with his children and family, running, playing the guitar, and reading.
