Description

Teaching yoga to teens:

This training equips you with the basic principles and tools needed to effectively teach yoga to teenagers. Although designed for an academic environment, our curriculum is easily adapted for use in a variety of settings, including yoga studios, at home, and in healthcare settings. You will study the internal and external changes in teenagers, and how changes can alter the teens’ yoga experience. Emphasis is placed on learning how to read and relate to teens through understanding adolescent development, anatomy, physiology, and learning domains. From this transformational training, you will emerge with the ability to effectively shift teaching practices to connect with teens.

Focus:

Ages 13 to 18 / Grades 6th to 12th

Objectives:

• Understand adolescents’ physical, mental, emotional, and social development
• Teach from a lens of social-emotional learning and brain-based learning
• Know the benefits of yoga for adolescents
• Design and develop lesson plans appropriate to the age group you are teaching
• Create yoga classes to fulfill the National Physical Education and Health Standards
• Effectively utilize yoga tools in the classroom to meet your student’s needs
• Teach yoga to adolescents 6th grade through 12th grade

What’s Involved:

This four-day program will run from Friday, January 17th thru Monday, January 20th. Each day will run from 9am-6: 30 pm with an hour for lunch and two 15 minute breaks.

CEU + Standards

Each training is certified by the Yoga Alliance and meets National Standards for P.E. Upon completion of each training, participants are eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for the Yoga Alliance, Child Life Council, and select school districts.

Recommended Background
No prior background or previous experience is required for our training — only a passion for yoga and/education, and a drive to support the health and wellness of youth/those considered to be at-risk.

Trainer:

Kate Beckel, E-RYT, RCYT, M.Ed

Kate Beckel is a skilled educator and yoga teacher who shares Yoga Ed.’s global vision for yoga education. Inspired by her experience attending international schools in both Paris and London, Kate went on to spend two years teaching in elementary schools in Hong Kong, followed by three years teaching elementary and special education in Istanbul. After remaining in Istanbul for three more years to deepen her yoga practice by teaching to both kids and adults, Kate returned to the United States to bring her worldly experience to teach yoga in a broad range of settings including schools, studios and prisons in the San Diego area. With her passion for restorative justice, Kate is particularly keen on empowering at-risk youth with life skills through yoga, and is interesting in expanding her work both in schools and in juvenile detention centers. Kate holds a B.A. in Elementary and Special Education and a M.Ed. with an emphasis in Math and Literacy Development from NYU.
