Event description

Description

Our students undoubtedly spend a lot of time thinking (and worrying) about assessment, but to what extent do they truly understand it? Self and peer assessment promote better understanding of the assessment process and deeper learning, but most students do not arrive in our classes adequately prepared to identify and address performance gaps in work. In order to help our students engage in meaningful self or peer assessment, instructors must model it, teach it, and facilitate structured assessment practice.

In this workshop, participants will explore approaches and tools for teaching students how to interpret and apply grading criteria to critically evaluate their own and classmates' work.

After this 1.5 hour workshop, participants will have the option of staying an additional half hour for a demonstration and Q&A about peer assessment technology tools (Peerceptiv, Turnitin, and/or Blackboard, based on participant preference) with an educational technology consultant.

As a result of completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the benefits of student self and peer assessment
  • Strategize how to incorporate opportunities for student self and/or peer assessment in their existing assignments
  • Review and select or create student self or peer assessment tools
  • Plan how to model assessment and facilitate student self and peer assessment

Registration for University Center for Teaching and Learning workshops is mandatory. Registering for workshops ensures the distribution of pre-workshop materials and helps maintain the integrity of our attendance records.

If you have any special accommodation needs, please contact us at workshops@teaching.pitt.edu in advance.
