Event description

Description

Are you curious about how to incorporate solutions journalism into your teaching? Ready to dig deeper into your approach? Eager to connect with like-minded educators?

This hands-on, half-day workshop for college-level journalism educators will equip you with a range of tools and approaches to teach solutions journalism to your students (plus a gourmet lunch!). We'll meet at Restaurant August (pictured above), where three solutions journalism educators will share the basics, as well as a range of strategies and approaches that you can apply in your classroom.

Workshop leaders:

Dr. Shearon Roberts is an assistant professor of Mass Communication and affiliate faculty of African American and Diaspora Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana, a historically black university in New Orleans. She teaches the Converged Media writing and production sequence, digital storytelling, and editing. She participated in the inaugural Solutions Journalism Educators Academy in 2018 and first began teaching solutions journalism in her courses that fall, in partnership with African American newspapers in New Orleans.

Edie Rubinowitz is an assistant professor with Northeastern Illinois University in their department of Communication, Media and Theatre, where she teaches solutions journalism. Rubinowtiz is the recipient of an ONA Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education grant to work with NEIU students and alumni on DACAmentation: Humanizing Our Stories, a podcast exploring the challenges that her students, many of them undocumented, face. She was a reporter for several years with Chicago Public Radio, and participated in the inaugural Solutions Journalism Educators Academy in 2018.

Sara Catania is director of journalism school partnerships for the Solutions Journalism Network and an adjunct journalism instructor at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. She serves on the program committee for Stanford's JSK Journalism Fellowship, where she was a fellow, and supports the ONA's Women's Leadership Accelerator as a mentor and advisor. Her journalism experience includes digital leader and newsroom manager, grounded in years of reporting and writing at a wide range of news outlets including the Los Angeles Times, Reuters, Mother Jones, the LA Weekly and NBC.
