Teaching Social Skills That Change Lives

Due to space considerations, walk-up registrations cannot be accepted.  All participants must pre-register online.

General Registration—Most participants attending the seminar should register under “General Registration”. This category of ticket is for participants who are attending for general knowledge and do not need  Continuing Education Units (CEUs).  The alternate registration categories (below) include the processing fee for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as needed to maintain autism-related professional licenses or certificates. 

Continuing Education Units for Professionals—Autism Partnership is an approved Continuing Education Provider for the following four (4) autism-related associations: ASHA, BBS, APA and BACB.

During on-line registration, you will be able to select a ticket that will register you to receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) upon completion of the workshop. (You should not choose "general registration").  You may sign-up to receive more than one CEU when registering IF you have certification numbers for more than one of the following associations. 

CEUs Pending Approval are: 

    • ASHA ( 0.6 units -Level: Intermediate; Area: Professional) and
    • BACB (7 type 2 units) and
    • APA (6 credits) and
    • BBS (6 hours)

If you are not associated with ASHA, BACB, APA or BBS, you can choose a “General CEUs” ticket. By registering under General CEUs, the participant is responsible for taking their certificate of attendance to their governing board, state or school district to negotiate if this workshop meets their requirements for continuing education. Since Autism Partnership is not affiliated with alternate boards, CEUs are not guaranteed.

Each Association has different requirements for participants to complete.  Prior to earning the CEUs, participants must:

  •  Register under the name used by ASHA, BACB, BBS or APA (for example, if your certification or license is under a maiden name or nickname, you must register under that name)
  •  Sign in/out on workshop day (ASHA requires participants to sign in/out for lunch as well)
  •  Complete and submit back to Autism Partnership the required packet on workshop day
  •  Pick up your certificate of attendance at the end of the workshop
  •  Attend the entire workshop day. We are unable to provide partial CEUs. Please make arrangements to attend the full workshop 

PRINT YOUR TICKET-At the conclusion of your on-line registration, your registration summary will be emailed to you from “Eventbrite”. Please download, print and bring this registration summary with you to the workshop (this is your ticket). This will expedite the check-in process for everyone.

ARRIVAL--Please arrive at Old Ranch County Club in Seal Beach, CA between 7:45 – 8:15 am for check-in. There will be a large number of participants parking and checking-in, so please arrive early. Coffee and refreshments will be available for all who arrive early.

PARKING—Enter at the intersection of Lampson and Basswood.  Do not enter at the Old Ranch “practice” facility.  There is limited free parking available in the lot at Old Ranch Country Club.  Your effort to meet up with and carpool with family, friends or colleagues is necessary and appreciated.  We will host a free raffle for all those who carpool so please meet up and arrive at the workshop with a full car.  Plenty of street parking is available in the neighborhoods surrounding the Old Ranch.  

LUNCH-There will be a lunch break when participants can leave to pick up a quick lunch. For your convenience, we will provide directions to restaurants about one mile away.  There are many choices: In & Out, Subway, Chipotle, Panera Bread, Pei Wei, Rubio’s Mexican grill, Z-Pizza and much, much more.

If you prefer, you can pre-purchase a box lunch or salad offered by Old Ranch Country Club for $12.50.  They have a beautiful patio off the golf course where you can dine.  More information and Pre-ordering procedures are available at our website  (  through  April 3, 2013.

During this one day training, Drs. Leaf, McEachin and Taubman will share the success stories of clients who, once isolated, have now developed meaningful friendships and have entered the world of dating and relationships. They will discuss the strategies and detail the programs that have been critical in achieving this success. Through discussion, videos and case presentations, participants will be better able to assist their students, clients and children in greatly improving their quality of life. And, after all, isn’t that the most important objective?

About the Presenters

Dr. Ronald Leaf is a licensed psychologist who has over thirty years of experience in the field of autism. Dr. Leaf began his career working with Professor Ivar Lovaas, while receiving his undergraduate degree at UCLA..

Subsequently, he received his doctorate under the direction of Dr. Lovaas. During his professional training at UCLA, he served as Clinic Supervisor, Research Psychologist, Lecturer, and Interim Director of the Young Autism Project. He was extensively involved in many of the Young Autism Project research investigations, contributed to The Me Book, and is co-author of The Me Book Videotapes, a series of instructional tapes offering training for teaching autistic children. He is co-author of A Work in Progress, a manual on behavioral treatment of autism, It’s Time for School! Building Quality ABA Educational Programs For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Sense And Nonsense In The Behavioral Treatment of Autism: It Has To Be Said and Crafting Connections: Contemporary Applied Behavior Analysis for Enriching the Social Lives of Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dr. Leaf has consulted nationally and internationally to families, school districts, day programs and residential treatment facilities. Dr. Leaf served as the Director of Straight Talk’s Developmental Disabilities Services division for 15 years. This program provided residential and day treatment for adults with developmental disabilities. Dr. Leaf is also the Executive Director of Behavior Therapy and Learning Center, a mental health agency providing treatment, consultation and related services to parents, program staff and school personnel in the United States.

Dr. John McEachin is a licensed psychologist who has been providing behavioral intervention to children with autism as well as adolescents and adults with a wide range of developmental disabilities for more than 30 years. He received his graduate training under Professor Ivar Lovaas at UCLA on the Young Autism Project.

During his 11 years at UCLA, Dr. McEachn served in various roles including Clinic Supervisor, Research and Teaching Assistant, Visiting Professor and Acting Director. His research has included the long-term follow-up study of young autistic children who received intensive behavioral treatment, which was published in 1993. Since receiving his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1987 his work has included serving as Clinical Director of Developmental Disabilities Services, a division of Straight Talk in Signal Hill, California. Dr. McEachin has lectured throughout the world and consulted to numerous families and agencies, assisting in the development of treatment programs and providing training to parents, group home staff, and classroom personnel.

In 1994 he joined with Ron Leaf in forming Autism Partnership, which they co-direct. In 1999 they co-authored a book on Applied Behavior Analysis for persons with autism, titled A Work in Progress. In 2008 they published It’s Time for School! Building Quality ABA Educational Programs For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders and Sense And Nonsense In The Behavioral Treatment of Autism: It Has To Be Said and Crafting Connections: Contemporary Applied Behavior Analysis for Enriching the Social Lives of Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Dr. Mitchell Taubman worked with Dr. Lovaas as an undergraduate at UCLA in the early 1970s. He treated children with autism, ADHD and other disorders. He then attended the University of Kansas, studying with such founders of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) as Dr. Donald Baer, Dr. Todd Risely, Dr. James Sherman, and his doctoral advisor, Dr. Montrose Wolf.

After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Taubman returned to UCLA and served as adjunct assistant professor of psychology and as co-principal investigator with Dr. Lovaas on a federal grant directed at autism treatment. One of his special interests in Teaching Interactions which he brought from the Kansas model to autism treatment. After his post-doctoral work, Dr. Taubman obtained his license as a clinical psychologist and served as clinical director of Straight Talk, a program providing residential and day treatment services to adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. He currently serves as Director of Autism Partnership, where he provides treatment oversight, training and consultation around the world. Dr. Taubman is the co-author of It’s Time for School! Building Quality ABA Educational Programs For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders and Sense And Nonsense In The Behavioral Treatment of Autism: It Has To Be Said and Crafting Connections: Contemporary Applied Behavior Analysis for Enriching the Social Lives of Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
