Freer speaking activities and the role of the teacher: what does the research say? (Philip Kerr)

Freer speaking activities are at the very heart of communicative language teaching. Getting students to speak is the first challenge for teachers, and many are content when this has been achieved. But what kind of learning actually takes place during these activities, and what can a teacher do to maximise the opportunities for learning? We’ll be focussing on the management of speaking activities (planning time, time limits, the use of L1, task repetition and reflection) and on approaches to feedback.

Philip Kerr

Philip Kerr is a teacher trainer and materials writer who lives and works in Austria. His publications include a number of best-selling coursebooks, including Evolve (CUP), Studio (Helbling), Straightforward and Inside Out (Macmillan), as well as methodology books, such as the award-winning Translation and Own-language Activities (CUP). He is also a consultant in the development of vocabulary apps, and blogs about technology and language learning at https://adaptivelearninginelt.wordpress.com/ .

'Excercise - why take the stairs?'

And I quote Mr. Smith himself, "Basically, I'll blether on about my frequent hobby-horse that materials design often makes life more difficult for learners rather than making it easier" - intriguing!

Howard Smith

Howard is Academic Director of OHC, a teacher, CELTA and Delta trainer with Teaching House and all-round knowledgable man.

Please pass this information and invite on to fellow EFL/ESOL teachers, trainers and managers - the more, the merrier!

TEFL chat and good company - The perfect Wednesday!
