Event Details

On Wednesday, May 24th 5-7pm at Baltimore Design School, Baltimore Teacher Network with WBAL’s Channel 11 will host a Teachers Town Hall moderated by WBAL's anchor; Dr. Tim Tooten. This promises to be an interesting discussion between panelists, teachers, parents and the community.

Panelists include:

  • Dr. Sonja Santelises - CEO, Baltimore City Public Schools
  • Senator Nathaniel J. McFadden - Maryland State Senate
  • Dr. William Kirwan - Kirwan Commission
  • Bebe Verdery - American Civil Liberties Union
  • Councilman Zeke Cohen - Baltimore City Chair of the Education Committee.

The purpose of this Teacher Town Hall is:

  1. to help teachers and parents understand how BCPS arrived at a $130Million deficit
  2. to help teachers and parents understand how the Kirwan Commission’s work will benefit the school district
  3. to explain the difference from the current Thornton Funding Formula to the proposed Kirwam Formula
  4. to help teachers and parents understand what their schools will look like, as it relates to staffing and programmatic oppurtunities and
  5. most importantly discuss what is being proposed/done for our schools next year (17/18)

Despite recent city and state commitments to close the district’s deficit, the school district still faces nearly $30Million in deficit. Parents and teachers are very concerned about the future of education in this city as they are still faced with the potential of several hundred BCPS staff being laid off.

Dr. Thornton, the author of the current Thornton Funding formula said at a recent Baltimoreans for Educational Equity meeting, that there is no issue or problem with the current funding formula other than the fact that is was never fully funded from the beginning. Thornton elaborated that if the state had included the rising cost of living increases (COLA) to the Thornton Funding over the past ten years the district would not be in the deficit it is in today. Some teachers and parents are confused over the need for a new formula and are curious to know rather a new formula would receive adequate funding from the State.

Get your questions answered, a better feeling and a calm sense for SY 17/18.
