Course Description

Intended for K-12 educators, but open to all, this course will allow you to step into the role of your students, reflecting from both the teacher and the learner perspective with a focus on the design and use of games for learning within flexible content area contexts (eg., STEM, social studies, ELA). The course will allow you to experience firsthand practices that are encouraged by Common Core and state standards, as well as 21st Century skills. In this course, you will create non-digital “learning games” focused on self-selected skills, practices, and concepts, along with supporting tasks and reflective spaces. You will produce not just discrete games, but a set of experiences generated by those games, enabling practical, effective classroom integration. Throughout this process you will ask deep questions about domain content and practice; observe and analyze student reactions and level of engagement; and reflect on your own teaching practice.

By the end of the course you will walk away with…

  • A firm understanding of the learning game design process,

  • A wealth of resources to aid you in your continued exploration of game-like learning,

  • A learning game that you design for use in your class,

  • Connections to a cohort of like-minded educators, and

  • Access to Institute of Play’sTeacherQuest platform, which will connect you to over 500 educators from around the world as well as a repository of IOP and TeacherQuest participant designed games and learning activities that you can use in your classroom!

TeacherQuest gives you the tools to use games, game design and play to master the art of student-centered teaching. Design your own non-digital games and game-like learning experiences that engage students, activate 21st Century skills, and improve learning outcomes. We believe every teacher is a designer. Throughout this course you will receive feedback from Institute of Play staff that will cultivate your creativity as you design innovative curriculum and learning tools.
