*Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder

Presenter: Professor Elizabeth Stringer Keefe, Faculty Director, Graduate Studies in Autism, Lesley University. Elizabeth is a teacher educator and researcher whose work focuses on special education teacher preparation, particularly in the area of autism. Actively involved in the MA autism teacher endorsement, she has taught and consulted for 20+ years in public & private education settings. She is President of Massachusetts Council for Exceptional Children.

This workshop provides a foundational context for understanding autism spectrum disorder. We will explore three aspects of autism, including communication, social interaction, and behavior, as well as a brief history of the recent changes to diagnostic criteria. The etiology of autism will be explored, as well as an overview of educational approaches, the concept of neurodiversity, and resources for educators.

* This workshop includes material that is applicable to the needs of diverse learners and children with special needs.
