Teacher Professional Development - Watershed Environmental Education Experience

Cost: $300.00 per participant (Full scholarships are available for the first 15 participants from the Shenandoah River Watershed in Virginia). Please include your school name and address in the registration.

Monday-Friday July 10th-14th, 2017

  • July 10-12: Spruce Knob Mountain Center near Circleville, WV

  • July 13: Activities and Field Trips in Shenandoah County, VA

  • July 14: Kayak Trip on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River

You will participate in the Appalachian Watershed & Stream Monitors (AWSM) professional development workshop at the Spruce Knob Mountain Center which provides resources and inspiration for educators seeking to engage students and enhance curriculum through the outdoor classroom. Participants will immerse themselves in water quality monitoring techniques and the wonders of headwaters stream ecosystems. Each participants will become a certified Save Our Streams Monitor. 45 re-certification hours are also available with Shenandoah, Rockingham and Warren Counties in Virginia. Teachers can also earn 3 continuing education graduate credits through Marshall University for $375.

Activities in WV and VA will focus on the Shenandoah River and the Appalachian Mountains as part of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. This program is designed to increase awareness of the Chesapeake Bay’s connection to the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and their tributaries and the issues surrounding their current and future health. Participants will meet many conservation professionals and learn about local fish and wildlife, pollution sources and solutions, benefits of riparian forests, farming techniques for clean rivers and other activities.
