Teacher Institute: The Power of Art

September 9 ∙ September 16 ∙ September 23

9 am – 3 pm

The Fowler Museum at UCLA

The Fowler Museum invites K-12 educators to explore community, identity, and self-expression through the arts.

In conjunction with the exhibition Axé Bahia: The Power of Art in an Afro-Brazilian Metropolis—presented as part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA—this free Teacher Institute examines Bahia’s African heritage through hands-on art making and interactive workshops.

The Teacher Institute consists of three full-day Saturdays of training. No prior experience in the arts is required.

Open to K-12 educators. Enrollment is limited to 25 participants. All attendees will be eligible to apply for a bus scholarship.
The Fowler Museum is proud to offer the Teacher Institute free of charge.
About the Exhibition
Axé Bahia introduces visitors to the unique cultural role of the city of Salvador, the coastal capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia and Los Angeles’s sister city. Including more than 100 artworks—including sculpture, painting, photography, video, and installations from the mid-20th century to the present—this exhibition explores the complexities of race and cultural affiliation in Brazil.
About the Teacher Institute
In addition to Fowler Education staff, guest artists and invited speakers will facilitate dynamic opportunities for you to learn art-making techniques and teaching strategies that help K-12 students connect to their personal and cultural identities. The Teacher Institute is designed to prepare K-12 educators to integrate the arts into their curriculum to foster student development of critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and visual literacy skills that support VAPA Standards and Common Core mandates.
After successfully attending and completing the assignments provided, participants will receive 1 LAUSD salary point.
About Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA
Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA is a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles. Supported by grants from the Getty Foundation, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA takes place from September 2017 through January 2018 at more than 70 cultural institutions across Southern California.
