Description

Tea-Time: Early Chinese Export Teapots

A Chinese export teapot is not just a teapot. It is more—a vessel which holds surprises for those who know how to interpret them. Shirley M. Mueller, M.D. shares her discoveries about these teapots with us on April 29, 2019 at the UC Davis Everson Hall, Room 157 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. She will reveal the struggle involved to transform a Chinese teapot into a teapot suitable for Western taste, one that took two centuries. Included in the presentation will be the information needed to date these teapots more accurately.

About Shirley M. Mueller

Shirley M. Mueller, M.D. has written a number of scholarly papers about Chinese export teapots. This led to invitations to speak about this subject to the American Ceramic Circle, the Oriental Society of London and at Nanchang University in Nanchang, China at the invitation of the Chinese government.

Dr. Mueller was co-curator for an exhibit, "The Luxury of Tea and Coffee" at the Indianapolis Art Museum (now Newfields) which ran for six years (2011-2017). A brief video summarizing the exhibit can be found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baoaJ5TJc_k&t=2s.

Mueller’s book, Inside the Head of a Collector: Neuropsychological Forces at Play, will be available in late summer, 2019.
