Impression Formation: Aesthetics, Legitimacy and Perceptions of Police

Country of Origin: Canada

Title: Impression Formation: Aesthetics, Legitimacy and Perceptions of Police

Description: Most 'police interaction' occurs in relatively unceremonious settings without exchange of formal dialogue between the public and the police (e.g., observing an officer in passing). Understanding factors that can influence these frequent, but important, interactions is thus particularly fruitful for informing both policy and practice. The present research, therefore, employs an experimental methodology to evaluate the effects of officer appearance on perceptions of the police. The results reveal that variation in appearance elicits significant variation in perceptions of officers. I discuss these results, and their implications, with respect to impression formation, legitimacy, and perceptions of the police more broadly.

Following Rylan's talk, we will gather around the test kitchen and learn how to make maple donuts, representing Rylan's Canadian roots.

Open to graduate students, undergraduates, faculty, staff, and community!
