Event description
Dr. Marilyn Cornelis of Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine will discuss what genetics has to do with your caffeine preferences.

About this Event

Coffee and tea are among the most widely consumed beverages in the world and have received considerable attention regarding health risks and benefits. These beverages are major sources of caffeine, a psychostimulant, but each contain a unique set of chemicals that also contribute to their unique taste and possible health effects. Understanding factors that drive beverage choice and the amount we consume therefore has important public health implications. In this talk, I summarize the latest genetic research underlying our coffee and tea drinking behaviors. I discuss much of my own research over the past 15 years that has focused on caffeine and which has received attention from media and direct-to-consumer genotyping services such as 23andMe.

Speaker:

Dr. Marilyn C. Cornelis is Assistant Professor of Preventative Medicine (Nutrition) at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine. She received her PhD from the University of Toronto in Nutrition in 2006. Her research aims to couple modern high-throughput omic-technologies to traditional clinical and epidemiological methods to enhance biological understanding of how diet and nutrition contribute to chronic disease. She has a special interest in the genetics of coffee consumption, caffeine metabolism, taste preferences and other dietary behaviors.
