New CTE Teacher Mentor Training


Thursday, October 26, 2017, 8:30 a.m. 4:00 p.m. and Friday, October 27, 2017, 8:30 a.m. 4:00 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE: The New CTE Teacher Mentor Training is a two-day training. Plan to attend from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on both Thursday, October 26, 2017, and Friday, October 27, 2017.

It is important that you follow your district or organization’s guidelines for travel. TEA will not provide reimbursement for travel or hotel.


When you arrive at New Tech Middle School, please park in the front of the building. Once all front spaces are taken, park on the side of the building. Please carpool if possible; spaces can be far from the building.


You will need your driver's license to check in at the front office prior to going up to Room A231.


A light breakfast, snacks, and lunch will be provided on both days of the training.


Please plan to bring a personal computing device (e.g., notebook, laptop, tablet) to the training. You will need to access various websites and online materials throughout the training.


The mentor training will explore important fundamentals of mentoring and review the components of the CTE New Teacher Mentor Program. Some topics covered during the training include the following:

  • Stages of beginning teaching

  • Building trusting relationships

  • Beginning teacher competencies (T-TESS Framework)

  • The Scaffolded Solutions® online system

  • Benefits of cognitive coaching

  • Questioning strategies

  • Establishing rapport

  • The wisdom/evidence cycle

  • Use of Guided Dialogues

  • Meeting the diverse needs of new CTE teachers

  • Coaching self-assessment

  • CTE New Teacher Mentor Program online communities

After the training, you will be required to mentor at least one new beginning CTE teacher in school year 2017–18.

Space is limited to 60 participants. Once the event is full, additional participants will be placed on a waitlist on a first-come, first-serve basis.


Each participant will receive a professional resource book on mentoring strategies for future reference.
