Description

From the overarching purpose and place qualified interpreters have in our community, to the practical fundamentals of the interpreting process, The Community Interpreter International® is one of the preeminent interpreter trainings in the world. Those at the very beginning of their interpreter careers and veteran interpreters alike will find that with this hands-on, discussion-based, activity-driven approach, with an emphasis on interpreting in the medical setting, TCI lends itself to immediate application to our professional work.

Course Objectives

• Define Communicative Autonomy

• Memorize one ethical principle from the NCIHC National Standards of Practice

• Demonstrate the three steps of the “Say-no Model”

• Develop at least one script for strategic mediation

Course Tuition

The cost of this course is $675.00 (US). Course materials and light breakfast refreshments are included. Lunch is on your own (there are many restaurants nearby).

This is a hybrid course. There will be 20 hours of online coursework and 20 hours of face-to-face classroom experience. The breakdown is as follows:

Online: 2/18 - 3/2/20

Class: Tuesday, 3/3/20, 8am-5pm, location TBA

Online 3/4 - 3/16/20

Class: Tuesday, 3/17/20, 8am - 5pm, location TBA

Class: Friday, 3/20/20, 8am -12pm, location TBA

This 40 hour workshop is intended for spoken and signed language interpreters, both students and professionals.

Michigan Medicine Interpreters Services is an Approved RID CMP Sponsor for continuing education activities.This PS program is offered for [4.0] CEUs at the Some Content Knowledge Level. No partial CEUs will be awarded.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations will be permitted four or more weeks prior to the start of a training course without incurring a fee. Due to the cost of establishing, holding, and refilling participant slots, along with the associated costs of language assessments and course materials, the following cancellation fee schedule applies:

• For 2 to 4 weeks prior to the start of a training course, a cancellation fee of 25% of the training course price will be assessed.

• Between 8-13 days prior to the start of a training course, a cancellation fee of 50% of the training course price will be assessed.

• Within 7 days of the start of a training course, a cancellation fee of 75% of the training course price will be assessed.

• No show on the first day of the training course will incur a cancellation fee of 100% of training course price.

 James is currently a staff interpreter at Michigan Medicine, University of Michigan Health System, and performing interpreter with Synergy On Stage. He is a graduate of, and formerly an instructor at, Baker College of Flint’s ITP. He maintains a private practice and specializes in medical, political, business and entertainment interpreting. He is also interested in physical health and repetitive motion injuries. He has been a certified interpreter since 2010.
