TCHAIKOVSKY: MUSIC & LIFE

Lunchtime recital with narration about Tchaikovsky's life.

Music programme to include P. Tchaikovsky's songs for soprano and piano, extracts from "The Seasons" and selected pieces from "Nutcracker" in arrangement by M. Pletnev for piano solo.

Yulia Chaplina won First Prize and the Gold Medal in the prestigious Tchaikovsky International Competition for Junior Musicians in 2004, going on to perform regularly as a soloist in many of the world's finest venues, including Wigmore Hall in London, Berlin’s Philharmonie, the Grand Halls of the Moscow Conservatory and the St. Petersburg Philharmonia, Bunka Kaikan Hall in Tokyo and many other prestigious concert halls.Her recent engagements and tours have included performing with the Russian Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Sinfonietta, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, Busan Philharmonic Orchestra, Moroccan National Orchestra and Basingstoke Symphony Orchestra. Her solo CD of Russian Music was recorded by Champs Hill Records in the UK in May 2014. The American Record Guide described this as "....an outstanding disc and one I’ll return to often." Yulia studied in Rostov and Moscow with Naum Shtarkman before moving to Berlin in 2006 to study with Klaus Hellwig at the University of Arts in Berlin. She holds a Master of Music (MMus) degree from the Royal College of Music in London, where she studied with Dmitri Alexeev. In 2013 Yulia was appointed the Mills Williams Junior Fellow at the Royal College of Music.

Belorussian soprano Alexia Mankovskaya graduated from Russian Academy of Dramatic Art, where she completed BA in acting and singing course. In 2009she completed MMus at Trinity College of Music, supported bythe Butler and Offenheim scholarships. Operatic roles performed include Marcelina (Marrige Figaro, Stanislavky Opera Theatre Moscow), Lola (Cavaleria Rusticana, Schloss Leopoldskron Palace, Salzburg), Madam Larina (Tchaikovsky; Evgenie Onegin; Cadogan Hall) Olga (Aghliari Summer Festival; Italy, Romeo ( Bellini Montecci e i Capuletti; Guildford Opera). Alexia regularly give recitals in the UK andacross Europe. She appeared in concert series at St. Martin in the Fields, Chipping Campden Festival, Spitalfields Festival, Royal Palace (Madrid, Spain), Kaiser Palace (Munich, Germany), Rachmaninovsky Hall (Moscow, Russia). Among her prizes and awardsFirst Prise of Padua International Competition, Elisabeth Shuman Prize for Lieder, Silver Medal of International Russian Music Competition, diplomas of Stuart Burrows International Voice Award, Ralf Welsh Competition, Bayreuth Bursary Competition andMorimondo International OperaCompetition. Future engagements involvesseries of recitals in London and Madrid, recordingher first solo CD and appearance as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana for The Reform Club Annual Opera, Grimeborn festival 2016 (UK) and Turku Sibelius Festiva 2017 (Finland).
