Series Description

Through the spiritual practice of Mussar and Jewish ethics, we will learn to manifest behaviors that express the light of our soul. Part of the study of Jewish ethics, Mussar is a treasury of techniques and understandings that offers immensely valuable character-building skills for the journey of our lives. Join Deborah (2018 Covenant Award recipient) in a fun, transformational, community-oriented series involving hevruta (partner) work, support and self-discovery. Workshops are interactive and involve taking a risk and sharing. Come polish up your character traits.

About Deborah

Deborah Newbrun is a gifted, creative, innovative teacher. She designed and led Tawonga’s award winning staff training and oversaw all camper programs for 24 years as our Camp Director. Deborah also created Tawonga’s Erev Rosh Hashanah Service, which she leads annually.

Her career as a Jewish leader spans more than 30 years. Deborah is a nationally recognized and award-winning Jewish educator. Her groundbreaking work: Spirit In Nature/Teaching Judaism and Ecology on the Trail, connects Jewish values with environmental values. Twenty years ago, she started the first Jewish LGBTQ Family Weekend in the country at Camp Tawonga, which she directs every year.

Deborah currently works with innovative Jewish organizations around the country, including SVARA, Hazon, Shalom Bayit, Jewish Learning Works, HaMaqom, Hineni, and Keshet as well as Tawonga. Deborah’s Mussar practice and learning began five years ago. Since then she has taught Mussar to adults and children with great success. Currently a rabbinic student, Deborah expects ordination in 2022.
