Event description

Description

Does the thought of being asked to improvise in a tap class make you anxious? Do you have a hard time spontaneously expressing yourself? This workshop will lead you to open your ears, calm your mind, and free your feet! The most true and creative expression of tap dancing is spontaneous, non-choreographed improvisation. But like any art form, it must be practiced in order to approach it with confidence. In this workshop we will learn how to use the vocabulary we know to serve our individual expression. We will work on freeing ourselves from performing “steps" by opening our ears and exploring our relationship to music, our fellow dancers, and our environment. As practitioners of a multi-disciplinary art form, we will take ownership of our duality as dancers and musicians. The workshop will begin by learning how to open your ears, feel time, and listen. Through group and solo exploration, we will work through several guided exercises that will begin with specific tasks eventually evolving into total freedom of expression. We will learn how to dance TOGETHER with fellow tap dancers and live musicians in a complementary way and SHARE the music! Through this practice, the student will be able to approach an improv jam with confidence and excitement, leaving the fear behind!

This session is limited to 10 participants. Advanced registration is strongly encouraged.

When: Monday, May 14th, 21st & 28th 7:30-9:00pm
