About this event

Hike Rating: Moderate; 7 mile loop

Guide: Cindy Murray (541-815-1404)

This outing will offer spectacular views of Lake Billy Chinook and the entire Cascade range. The trail begins at the Upper Deschutes day use area located in Cove Palisades State Park. We will climb up the canyon on a switch-back trail with elevation gain of 600 feet. The trail is well maintained but narrow in some areas. Once on top of the Peninsula, the trail loops around the sheer rim where we may see soaring eagles above Lake Billy Chinook. Spring flowers will be in bloom - bring your Guide to the Native Plants of the Deschutes Canyon Area. Standard hiking equipment includes sturdy boots, lunch, water, extra clothing layer and hiking poles. Bring a face mask in case physical distancing at times requires that we wear masks.

This is a free hike, limited to 8 participants and registration is required If the hike is full, add your name to the wait list. If any cancellations occur, you will be notified via email. No pets permitted.

DIRECTIONS: Drive north on Hwy 97 toward Madras. Turn left at the sign to Cove Palisades State Park/Lake Billy Chinook and follow the signs to the lake. Continue driving down to the lake and cross the bridge over the Crooked River arm. Look for the Upper Deschutes day use area parking lot after driving up the canyon. There will also be a “FANs” EVENT SIGN displayed. We will meet up at the parking area. Please plan to pay a day use fee or display your Oregon State Park Recreation Pass.

This event is sponsored by Friends and Neighbors of the Deschutes Canyon Area (FANs), a group founded in 2011 by landowners surrounding the Deschutes Canyon-Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area in Central Oregon who came together over their shared love of nearby public lands.  The focus area of FANs includes many special places such as Steelhead Falls, Alder Springs, the Peninsula, Otter Bench and Scout Camp.  Become a member by visiting our website at www.fansofdeschutes.org.  Memberships are just $10 per person per year.
