Event description
The Tallahassee Historical Society will hold its annual holiday meeting and potluck on December 9th.

About this event

The Tallahassee Historical Society is pleased to invite members and non-members to its December 9 “pot luck” dinner at the historic St. John’s Episcopal Church at 211 North Monroe Street. As is traditional for our Christmas meeting, the Society will provide the meat and drink; those attending are urged to bring side dishes, including vegetables, salads, desserts and other items. Non-members will be charged $10. Dinner will begin at 6:30, with our program starting at 7:00.

Our speaker, by Zoom projected on a screen, will be Dr. Charles Ewen, the de Soto site principal investigator, and now the director of the Phelps Archaeology Laboratory at East Carolina University (ECU). Dr. Ewen’s presentation, “Soldier of Misfortune: the Discovery of the de Soto Site” will recount the events surrounding the discovery. Dr. Ewen received his PhD at the University of Florida in 1987. After excavating Hernando de Soto’s winter encampment, he moved to Arkansas to run contracts for the Arkansas Archeological Survey. He joined the faculty at ECU in 1994 and is currently a full professor in the anthropology department as well as Director of the Phelps Archaeology Laboratory.
