Join Locust Projects and Oolite Arts for a conversation with director and curator Kerry Brougher.

Kerry Brougher is the Founding Director of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles and Curator Emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. He was Director and CEO of the Renzo Piano-designed Academy Museum from 2014 to 2019.

For nearly fourteen years Brougher was the Chief Curator, Deputy Director, as well as Interim Director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington. He was also the Director of Modern Art Oxford in England and Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles during its inception and formative years. Along with major retrospectives of artists such as Jeff Wall, Ed Ruscha, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Gustav Metzger, and Yves Klein, Brougher is known for numerous thematic exhibitions, many focusing on the moving image, such as Hall of Mirrors: Art and Film Since 1945; Notorious: Alfred Hitchcock and Contemporary Art; Open City: Street Photographs Since 1950; Visual Music; The Cinema Effect: Illusion, Reality, and the Moving Image; and Damage Control: Art and Destruction Since 1950. He also organized SONG 1, artist Doug Aitken’s 360-degree moving image projection onto the facade of the Hirshhorn on the National Mall. Brougher’s exhibitions and books have won numerous awards, including two first place prizes from the International Art Critics Association.
