Intuition Wellness Center, PLLC Presents “Talking to Children about Tragedy”
Description of Program:
In a year plagued by seemingly constant violence, national disasters, and unspeakable tragedy immortalized by in-depth media coverage, this seminar reviews the physical and psychological impact of indirect exposure to adversity on children. This seminar will also examine evidence-based approaches to treating children impacted by significant stressors and trauma as well as to help professionals generate developmentally appropriate language and caregiver tools to assist children in understanding tragic events.

Educational Objectives. After attending this intermediate-level program in full, participants will be able to:
- List signs and symptoms of childhood PTSD and rule out disorders.
- Identify evidence-based treatment options for addressing childhood adversity.
- Describe developmentally appropriate language for discussing adversity with children.
- Identify tools and strategies for the caregivers of children impacted by indirect exposure to adversity.
Brandy Baker, PsyD is a licensed clinical psychologist. Dr. Baker has worked in community mental health, teen residential treatment, schools, social service agencies, and in other community organizations. Dr. Baker has assisted strategic planning and designed culturally sensitive programming for a variety of communities to teach about mental health and eliminate shame surrounding mental illness. As co-owner and Clinical Training Director at Intuition Wellness Center, she provides therapy to children, adolescents, and families; consultation to schools, supervises the clinical team, and oversees a training program for the University of Arizona Clinical and School Psychology PhD students. Dr. Baker has several years of experience and training working with pediatric populations impacted by adversity and severe trauma. Her doctoral dissertation was on the topic of resilience in children and families at-risk for child maltreatment. She has developed and implemented numerous programs for children and families, including programs for inner-city youth and child welfare systems. Dr. Baker currently works with a predominantly bright, talented, and hypersensitive population of children, teens, and caregivers persevering through anxiety, phobias, mood dysregulation, giftedness, and peer difficulties. For several years, Dr. Baker has shared her passion for the topic of resilience and strength-based approaches with others by teaching numerous workshops and seminars to professional groups, organizations, graduate-level students and parents.

This workshop is open to all psychologists and mental health professionals interested in learning more about talking to children about tragedy. The program is directed toward those with an intermediate level of knowledge and experience, but is open to all levels of expertise.
This program is available for 2.0 continuing education credits. Participants must attend 100% of the lecture in order to receive continuing education credits. Upon completion of a program evaluation form, a certificate will be issued. This serves as documentation of attendance for all participants.
