Event description

Description

Too often, as we go through our daily lives—sitting at a stoplight, waiting in line at the grocery store—many of us feel emotionally alone with the swelling undercurrent of climate change. We feel the absence of meaningful conversation about the emotional impact it’s having on us and others. Our leaders don’t acknowledge our emotions. The media mostly focuses on the science, political arguing, or dramatic images that whip up fear. And we might not feel comfortable turning to family or friends because we’re unsure whether they’ll respond to us with care.

This group experience will provide a safe, intimate circle for the kind of real and heartfelt conversation about climate change that so many of us yearn to have. Whatever you feel—afraid, grieved, angry, or guilty; hopeless, numb, paralyzed, or ambivalent; all of the above or something else—we’ll give voice to and explore together different aspects of our emotions about climate change. We’ll create a space, through supportive presence and deep listening, where our emotions can untangle and can inform and enliven us.

You will leave the circle with more clarity about your feelings about climate change, tools for managing and working with your emotions, an increased sense of well-being and resilience, and a sense of community. For those who also want specific ideas for taking formal action, a list of organizations and resources for getting involved and for learning more about climate change will be provided.

Formal activism is not part of this experience, by design. Feeling pressured to act can reinforce anxiety and short-circuit the emotional sifting that precedes wise, creative, and authentic action. We will be practicing, instead, a “soft” activism that is a crucial seed of change: speaking our truths to each other about what has felt unspeakable, and letting those truths guide us together and individually.
