About this event
In the 1860s and 70s one of Hotham’s mayors, William Hutchison, operated a foundry in Little Bourke Street where he made some of the ornamental iron lace that still graces houses around North and West Melbourne today.
Although he was well known at the time Hutchison’s work does not carry a maker’s name so Robin Vowels from RMIT decided to work out (if he could) which pieces were from Hutchison’s foundry.
Come and hear what clues he used and what he found out.
Robin Vowels was a senior lecturer in computer science at RMIT. He has a keen interest in heritage issues, and has made written submissions on specific projects, the main one advocating retention of historic terrace houses in and near University Square in Carlton. Subsequently he commenced photographing terrace houses in inner Melbourne. From that project, he produced three volumes on decorative ironwork in Victoria. For the first volume, he received a Victorian Community History Award for the most outstanding work in 2013.
Tickets are for live-in-person attendance only.
