The fate of Afghan women is a barometer for women elsewhere. As intra-Afghan peace talks proceed, the threat grows of grave compromise on women’s rights. This panel features world renowned experts and activists who will speak to the global foreign policy effects of protecting the rights women have achieved from fundamentalisms, including what the legitimization of Taliban ideology means for women in other Muslim-majority countries, the security consequences for other states of empowering the Taliban, and how concessions to the Taliban will encourage other Islamist militant groups seeking to reverse women’s rights, such as Al Shabab, Boko Haram and ISIS.
Featuring:
- Moderator H.E. Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations
- H.E. Adela Raz, Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations
- Nargis Nehan, Acting Minister of Mines and Petroleum, Government of Afghanistan
- Farida Shaheed, Executive Director, Shirkat Gah-Women's Resource Centre in Pakistan
- Zarqa Yaftali, Co-Chair of Women, Peace and Security Working Group, and Member of the High Council for National Reconciliation
