Event description
Dublin City Council Conservation Section's annual one-day seminar for architects and conservation professionals

About this Event

Open House Dublin, Ireland’s biggest architecture festival, was established in 2005 by the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) to celebrate Dublin’s most innovative and inspirational architectural forms. The IAF Open House Theme this year is ‘City in Motion’.

In tandem with the Open House Event, Dublin City Council’s Conservation Section organises an annual seminar for architects and conservation professionals. This seminar has become an important annual event for Dublin City Council, and continuing with this tradition, we have organised a one-day conference which will take place on Tuesday the 8th October 2019 at City Hall on Dame Street (9am – 5pm).

Our Theme for our 2019 Conference is ‘Taking Stock’, where we will be looking at how we evaluate and value our present and future architectural heritage, including newly protected and proposed protected and unprotected structures, particularly from the 20th century. We are conscious that with the current intensive development underway within the city and housing and commercial pressures allied with recent Government Guidelines on Urban Development and Building Heights, Apartment and Co-Housing Standards, and the implications of global warming and climate emergency, the replacement of existing building stock has become an everyday occurrence. The speakers will cover a variety of topics including the consideration of the values and significance of our existing building stock in the first instance, and the important role it plays in shaping the rich and varied cityscape in which we live. We will consider the environmental consequences of demolition, and present what we consider to be successful examples of a variety of schemes where the existing buildings have been/will be retained, repurposed and modified in response to the client’s brief.

Our speakers include Dr. Deborah Mays, Head of Listing at Historic England, Dr. Ellen Rowley, Architects Simon Walker, Pascal Mahoney, Vicky Landy, Cecelia Naughton, Andrew Howley, Ronan Phelan, Mark Whelan, Rosie Webb who will discuss various building projects and Pat Barry, CEO of the Irish Green Building Council. The event will be moderated by Carole Pollard and Colm Murray.

Our target audience is primarily professionals working in the realm of architectural conservation, including accredited architects and conservation architects, architectural conservation officers, planners and other practitioners with an interest in the architectural heritage of Dublin City and the wider context.

Attendance will provide 6 RIAI CPD points.
