Taking Care of Business:

Come and find out how to take care of your mob

FREE advice and information for Aboriginal people at NCIE
Wednesday 10 October, 10am – 2pm

On Wednesday 10 October, a very special FREE community event is taking place for Aboriginal people at the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence (NCIE). The Taking Care of Business community day will offer information and practical advice on how to get your affairs in order.

At important times in our life, we start to think about questions like:

  • Who will take care of my mob if something happens to me?
  • Who will make decisions about money if I can’t?
  • Who will make decisions about my health and where I live, if I can’t?
  • Who will take care of my business if I am not able to?

From 10am until 2pm, NSW Trustee & Guardian, along with expert staff from a variety of organisations such as the Public Guardian, Births, Deaths & Marriages, Victim Services, LawAccess NSW, Redfern Community Health Centre, Centrelink, Legal Aid, Energy & Water Ombudsman, NSW Ombudsmand, Uniting Care, St Vincent's and Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation, will be on hand to answer these questions.

There will also be a special art exhibition featuring young Aboriginal artists from the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience, who created artworks that illustrate the idea of ‘Family: what it means to me’.

Lunchtime talks will start from 12:30pm, covering topics like why making a Will is especially important for Aboriginal people, how to include items of sentimental or cultural value, organising guardianship of their children, as well as decisions about how to include secret knowledge.

People can also pick up a copy of the Taking care of business handbook. The free publication is produced by NSW Trustee & Guardian and is designed to help Aboriginal people plan ahead. It has lots of practical advice about how you can recognise the important people in your life in your planning ahead documents, like a Will, even if they aren’t blood relations - and why It’s important everyone has a Will, Power of Attorney and enduring guardians appointed.

Entry is free and registration is required. Everyone attending will receive a show bag and light refreshments will be available. Please call (02) 9240 0857 or email tagenquiries@tag.nsw.gov.au for more information.
