HTML. The foundation of almost every single web site and, yet, one of the most overlooked languages.

It has the power to make your sites more accessible. To help search engines find your site. To make your content sharable and syndicatable. It even has the power to save you time and money.

But, of course, not just any HTML can do all this. Your HTML has to be one louder.

Our very own markup expert, Emily Lewis, will show you how to take your markup to eleven with these advanced HTML techniques:

  • Designing pages efficiently with semantic markup
  • Deciding what parts of HTML5 work for you
  • Structuring page layout with new HTML5 semantic elements
  • Adding more meaning with microformats (and take a peek at HTML5's microdata)
  • Implementing forward-thinking accessibility with WAI-ARIA

You'll see practical examples and learn best practices, so you can immediately start writing markup that goes to eleven. And, yes, there will be more Spinal Tap references.

About Our Presenter

Emily is a freelance web designer of the standardista variety, which means she gets excited about things like valid POSH, microformats and accessibility. As part of her ongoing quest to spread good word about standards, she writes about web design on her blog, A Blog Not Limited, and is a contributing writer for ScriptJunkie.net magazine and MIX Online. She's also the author of Microformats Made Simple.

Emily is also passionate about community building and knowledge sharing, which is why she co-founded and co-manages Webuquerque, as well as the local Duke City Tech podcast. She is also an instructor for UNMCE's web design certification program, and speaks at conferences all over the country, including In Control, Voices That Matter and SXSW.

Webuquerque

Webuquerque is a division of the New Mexico Adobe User Group (NMAUG) that is geared entirely toward web professionals and folks interested in learning more about the web.

While we are an Adobe User Group, our primary agenda is not an Adobe agenda. Our mission is to provide a forum for local web professionals to:

  • Exchange ideas and information
  • Further professional skills
  • Advance web standards and best practices
  • Give back to the community

To that aim, we host free, monthly events that begin with a presentation on a web topic, followed by socializing and networking. The goal is to combine education and social.

We meet the first Wednesday of every month at One Up Elevated Lounge in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
