The National Park Service encourges people to get fit, and to get outoors. This summer join a park ranger at Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites as we explore various  sights and sounds along the Hyde Park Trails with four different types of hikes.

Our trail hikes are easy to moderate, and are 1 to 3 miles in length.

Hike #1-  200 Years of Landscape History at Hyde Park (June 16, 2pm-3pmJuly 21, 2pm-3pmAug 18, 2pm-3pmSept 15, 2pm-3pm)

During an easy one hour one mile hike, a ranger will chronicle more than 200 years of landscape history at the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site helping participants catch a glimpse of earlier estate owner’s legacies.  Meet the National Park Service Ranger at the famous “Overlook” north of the Visitor Center for a walk that ends in the beautiful Formal Gardens.  Dress appropriately for the weather.

An optional 30 minute guided tour of the Vanderbilt Gardens will be offered as well immediately after the conclusion of this hike. The garden tour is offered and presented by volunteers of the Frederick William Vanderbilt Garden Association.

Bring: water, cameras, bug spray, sun screen and/or a hat for protection from the sun.

 Hike #2- FDR and Forestry  (June 9, 10am-11am, and August 3, 10am-11am)

This moderate 3 mile round trip hike takes place on the Roosevelt farm land and is lead by a National Park Service Ranger who will talk about FDR’s lesser known career as a tree farmer while pointing out tree plantation managed by the President.  Meet at the Roosevelt  Farm Lane Trailhead on Rt. 9 opposite the Home of FDR.

Hike #3- Bird Watching Hike at Roosevelt’s Hyde Park Estate (June 15, 6:30am-8am, and

August 24, 6:30am-8am)

During a 90 minute hike on the Roosevelt Cove Trail a National Park Ranger will help in identifying birds and the places in the park where the largest number of different bird varieties can be found. This hike skirts wetlands below the family home and finishes at the Hudson River.
