Event description
Virtual author event. Ecologist Tom Wessels, New England's Roadside Ecology: Explore 30 of the Region's Unique Natural Areas.

About this event

Virtual author event!

Gibson's Bookstore is pleased to virtually welcome author/ecologist Tom Wessels as he presents New England's Roadside Ecology: Explore 30 of the Region's Unique Natural Areas, which guides you through hikes to 30 spectacular natural sites, all within an easy walk from the road. The sites include the forests, wetlands, alpines, dunes, and geologic ecosystems that make up New England. Tom will be joined in conversation by David Govatski, a longtime US Forest Service employee and a noted North Country naturalist.

Author Tom Wessels is the perfect guide. Each entry starts with the brief description of the hike's level of difficulty—all are gentle to moderate and cover no more than two miles. Entries also include turn-by-turn directions and clear descriptions of the flora, fauna, and fungi you are likely to encounter along the way. New England’s Roadside Ecology is a must-have guide for outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, and tourists in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

About the author: Tom Wessels is a terrestrial ecologist and professor emeritus at Antioch University New England where he founded the master’s degree program in Conservation Biology. With interests in forest, desert, arctic, and alpine ecosystems, plus geomorphology, evolutionary ecology, complex systems science, and the interface of landscape and culture, Tom considers himself a generalist. He has conducted workshops on ecology and sustainability throughout the country for over three decades.

David Govatski has been a Naturalist for over twenty years. His professional background was with the U.S. Forest Service where he worked for 33 years until retirement in a variety of positions and locations across the country as a Forester, Silviculturist, and a Forest Fire Management Officer. Since his retirement he has worked as a Naturalist including several summers as an expedition ship naturalist in Alaska and Iceland. David has a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Management and has technical certifications in Silviculture, Wildland Management, and Forest Fire Management. His nature specialties include birds, arctic-alpine plants, geology, and wildlife. He also has a strong interest in forest history and has authored numerous magazine and journal articles and a book on forest history.
