Event description

Description

Tickets are $6 in advance (choose your seats) and go on sale Wednesday, September 4, at 10 am. Remaining tickets are free at the door, beginning at 6:30 pm on the day of the show.

Leading players with the Taipei Symphony perform chamber music by Mendelssohn and Nikolai Tcherepnin plus arrangements of traditional music from Taiwan. The chamber ensemble is led by the orchestra’s concert master, Roger Chih-I Chiang, along with associate concertmaster Ting-Hsuan Hu, principal cellist Cheng-Hsuan Chien, and principal horn Chi-Yang Wang (pictured), joined by other orchestra members on violin, viola, double-bass, bass clarinet, and horn.

The complete program features Mendelssohn’s luscious Octet for Strings, op.20 (1825) and Nikolai Tcherepnin’s rarely-heard Six Pieces for Four French Horns (1910). Filling out the program are Peach Blossom Ferry Crossing (a Taiwanese folk song arranged for string quartet by Shiuan Chang); the first movement from Borodin’s String Quartet no. 2; God Drops Water (a Hakka folk song arranged for electric piano, bass clarinet, and double bass by Shiuan Chang); the beloved Taiwanese piece Yu-Hsien Teng: The Torment of a Flower (arranged for string quartet by Wei-Chieh Jay Lin); and Pastel Song (Taiwan aboriginal music arranged for string quintet by Shiuan Chang).

This concert is a co-presentation of the Freer and Sackler Galleries (Smithsonian), Washington Performing Arts, and the Taiwan Academy, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States. It is part of the Bill and Mary Meyer Concert Series.
