Taiko 101: A Japanese Drumming Workshop
Sun, April 23, 2017, 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM CDT
Ever seen a taiko performance and thought to yourself, “I have to try that”? Well, this introductory workshop provides the perfect opportunity! Join us this spring for a JASC-exclusive taiko workshop, led by one of Chicago’s premiere ensembles: Ho Etsu.
We provide the taiko (drums), bachi (drumsticks), and instruction; you provide the enthusiasm and excitement. At this workshop, you learn not only about the history of taiko and the different drums we use, but also the correct way to hit and stand at the drum. By the end of class, we’ve created a small song for you to play on your own!
*No musical experience is necessary. *Wear comfortable clothing (we’ll be moving a lot!). *Recommended for Ages 10 – 100. *Join us afterward for an informal Ho Etsu-JASC Mixer nearby!
About Ho Etsu: Ho Etsu is a collective of musicians with a fresh take on the art of Japanese drumming. They push the envelope through collaborations with other taiko groups, musicians, and culturally-focused performance artists while always staying grounded in the rich tradition of kumi-daiko. Their deep Chicago roots support our work with a variety of musical styles, from jazz to Latin and hip-hop. Check them out at www.HoEtsu.org!
