Experience the wonder and awe of the dark skies above Northstar California during our popular summer Tahoe Star Tours!
Inspired by the growing popularity of the annual summer star gazing series in the Northern Sierra, Tahoe Star Tours is back at two viewing venues, the Dark Skies Cosmoarium and The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, for those who want to learn about and experience the night sky Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from June 13 through September 5, 2015.
On Thursday and Saturday evenings the tours will be offered at the Cosmoarium, which offers convenient access for guests lodging or visiting the resort, located near the entrance to Northstar on the lower level of the Castle Peak parking area. Featuring wide, unobstructed horizons for viewing, the Cosmoarium provides Tahoe Star Tours participants with comfortable seating, fire pits, outdoor heaters and blankets, complimentary hot chocolate, coffee and s’mores, as well as convenient, free on-site parking just a short walk from the viewing site.
On Friday evenings the tours will move up to The Backyard of The Ritz-Calrton, Lake Tahoe. Guests will enjoy the personalized service offered by the Ladies and Gentlemen of The Ritz-Carlton while gazing at the night sky in a private viewing area with comfortable seating, outdoor heaters and blankets with cocktail service thoughout the evening.
Star Guide extraordinaire, Tony Berendsen, owner of Tahoe Star Tours and president of the Northern Nevada Science Coalition, will lead you on each exploration of the skies. He’ll provide an informative Star Tour Astronomy presentation, a laser tour of the stars and telescopic viewing through multiple state-of-the-art computerized Celestron telescopes. And you won’t leave empty handed – all guests will earn the status of “Star Guide” along with a badge that you can take home to remember your experiences.
Tahoe Star Tours events are $35 for adults and $20 for children ages 12 and under. Tours begin at 8:15 p.m. and conclude at 10:45 p.m.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
Thursday and Saturday evenings guests can drive to the viewing site located at the Castle Peak Parking Lot #1, directly to the right of the roundabout on Northstar Drive. Please arrive between 8:15pm and 8:30pm to meet up with the other members of the tour. Star Guide Tony will be waiting to greet you and check your party in for the tour.
On Friday evenings guests can park in the Northstar Village Parking Lot and take the Highlands Gondola from the Village to The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe. Please load the Gondola by 8pm to make sure you're at the top by 8:15pm. Star Guide Tony will be waiting to greet you and check your party in for the tour.
What can/can't I bring to the event?
Please make sure to bring a jacket as it can get chilly during the Sierra nights and wear comfortable shoes since you will be walking on pavement for approximately 5-10 minutes and at The Ritz-Carlton, your tour will take place on a dirt/woodchipped area.
Due to the group size please refrain from bringing your own telescopes. We'll have three telescopes for participants to use, including the Celestron Sky Prodigy 6 robotic telescope, and Ipad wireless telescope operation using the SkyQ to get a great view of the night sky!
Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Feel free to reach out to the Northstar Season Pass & Tickets Office with any questions prior to the tour by calling 1-800-GO-NORTH. If you have a question the night of the tour, please contact Star Guide Tony directly by calling (775) 232-0844.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
You don’t need to bring anything; Star Guide Tony will have a list of registered guests.
What is the refund policy?
All event sales are final; no refunds will be issued.
