Event description

Description

Learn how citizen-led street design can transform Durham in this interactive tactical urbanism course. Durham is a creative city. It is also a city with enormous brainpower capable of enacting change and building a stronger community. More than ever before, citizens are empowered to design, and sometimes even build, physical infrastructure. From Miami to Seattle, citizens are implementing tactical urbanism ideas in the form of pocket parks, bike lanes, flash dances and pop up murals.

Durham Bicycle Boulevards, together with Bike Durham, have joined forces to deliver this four-week street design series to illustrate tactical urbanism concepts in Durham.

This series aims to draw and implement citizen-led street design for all road users through temporary and inexpensive approaches.

The classes will be held Tuesdays in September. While the classes are based around drawing, round table themes include:

  • September 5th: What is Tactical Urbanism: purpose, various approaches or 'tactics'
  • September 12th: Intro to street hierarchy in design: neighborhood streets, collectors, arterials
  • September 19th: Intersection design
  • September 26th: Wayfinding
  • Final capstone exhibiting participant work

Each of the four classes will feature:

  • Introduction – Brief presentation on specific applications and strategies for redesigning your street
  • Labwork – illustrating your ideal street using simple overlay sketches on paper or tablets. We will have streets from the Durham Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Update, or you can B.Y.O.S (bring your own street)
  • Discussion and wrap up

Space is limited so please register as soon as possible.

The workshop venue will be in Downtown Durham (specific details to follow). Refreshments will be provided.
