Taco Fest is a fundraiser for the LoisirsLit, Literacy & Mass Communication Program. This event page was designed to receive your tax-deductible donation to help make Taco Fest a huge success! Thank you for your support and kindly read below for information about our non-profit program.
This is the first year of Taco Fest and we want you to be involved. We want bridge the gap between education, community, and culture. Taco Fest will be providing free public entertainment: food, drink, musical line-up of: Bill Summers, Los Po-Bo-Citos, N.O. Nightingales, Panorama Jazz Band, & Bo Dallas and the Indians. There will also be a huge kiddie section, Taco & Cocktail contest, auction and much more. The funds received from the Taco Fest ensure that we will be able to reach our goal in being able to purchase new, much needed computers for our media-arts program and transportation costs. In addition, we need to find a new building to host the program as our current building location will be unavailable at the end of the school year.
The Mission of Loisirslit (French for “reading for leisure”) is to propel literacy, the arts, social justice, healthy living and achievement for New Orleans' native sons and daughters. We fulfill this mission through the LoisirsLit radio show, and our after-school literacy and mass-communication program for local high school students.
Loisirslit, the after school program, is an effort by local advocates, teachers, and community leaders to use the arts and mass communication, along with focused 4-student classes in literacy and mathematics, to open up the possibility of educational excellence, and with it middle-class jobs and real college opportunities for our scholars, regardless the educational deficits or obstacles they might arrive with. Our 32 students in grades 9-12 will take on the real-life responsibility of learning to produce, write, schedule, broadcast, market and advertise the Loisirslit Radio Show along with the LoisirsLit Young Scholars broadcast, which will air twice a month from the library, gym, or auditorium of the schools we partner with. Each student accepted into the program will declare a specific focus in mass communications/ media arts and will be mentored and instructed in 4-student classes led by experienced professionals working in their department of the radio station:
4.Community Relations/ Business Development 8.Creative Writing/Journalism
