Description

Interested in selling on Etsy or EBay? Need product photos for your website, social media feeds, or promotional materials? Want to create photos of your artwork for an online portfolio or preserve your child's artwork through digital images? Or perhaps you'd like to create professional-looking greeting cards?

Whatever the need, this Tabletop Studio Photography class will take you through the process of building a small, portable tabletop studio backdrop which we will practice using with both natural window light and simple studio lights.

During the first half of this workshop, we will use PVC piping and joints to create a light-weight foldable frame that each participant will be able to take home. We will mount white or colored poster paper on the frame to create a seamless background for photographing products, artwork, jewelry, flowers or other small items.

In the second half of the workshop, we will use the backdrops we built to photograph a variety of different objects using natural light. Participants will take turns using a simple studio light setup in order to experience both types of lighting conditions. We'll begin with some easy, non-reflective objects and then move on to more challenging shiny objects. After working together on a few of the same objects, you are welcome to photograph your own objects. If you choose not bring your own, there will be plenty of practice items available to photograph.

You may use any type of camera you wish for this workshop, including a smart phone camera. If you do bring a DSLR camera, please be sure you know how to operate the camera. There won't be time in class for the instructor to help with adjusting camera settings.

At the end of the class, the instructor will demonstrate some basic photo editing techniques that you can use to enhance your images. She will also demonstrate how to drop out the background of an image, expanding the ways you will be able to use your photographs.

The instructor will provide all materials for constructing the backdrop as well as some sample items to photograph. You need to bring:

  • Camera or smart phone

  • Fully charged battery

  • Small objects you would like to photograph (optional)
