This workshop is part of our 'Masterclass' professional development and capacity-building program - learn more about the other topics in the series.
Every Masterclass has two sessions: a '101' intro/overview and a '201' deeper dive, with a facilitated in-person peer learning session scheduled in between. Register for both sessions for the best value and a complete learning experience.
This Masterclass on Systems Mapping for Insights is led by Fiona Wright of The Lansdowne Group.
101 Session: Wednesday October 5th, 9:00-11:00am
2D & 3D Mapping for Social Network Analysis
Why? The challenges we face are so complex they can’t be solved by you alone, and you have to have a basic understanding of the system in order to create an intentional impact.
Learn how to build a robust System Map using the KUMU platform (free online at kumu.io)
Visualize a system using online software. You will create a systems map of your choosing:
- A stakeholder map
- A social network map
- A complex systems map or causal loop diagram
- A community asset map
Look at direct (1st degree), indirect (2nd degree) and extended (3rd degree) connections, and get a quick and dirty overview on how to find hidden insights by filtering, clustering and running basic analysis.
Please bring a laptop equipped with Microsoft Excel.
Peer Learning Session: Tuesday October 18th, 9:00-11:00am
Want your Masterclass to have a greater impact? Attend this peer learning session to revisit your learning topic, discuss specific challenges, consider solutions, and uncover additional resources that will help you achieve your learning goals. The peer learning session will help you stay focused, be accountable, and make sure your learning creates value for your organization and communities.
This session will be run by Impact Hub's learning facilitator Nico Koenig, and is a value-added benefit for those who register for the 101 and 101+201 workshops. It also includes access to an online learning forum.
201 Session: Tuesday November 22nd, 9:00-11:00am
Building on 101, we will look at different styles of systems maps and their usefulness to different scenarios.
Here is where the real power of the software lies. Learn how to run and interpret social network analyses to locate hubs, bottlenecks, hidden communities and alignment around different issues.
We will take your map to the next level with different visualization techniques to make it insightful and easy to interpret.
Learn how to filter the map for different types of elements or degrees of connections, and how to look at clusters based on different qualities or ‘tags’. This is where the power of the map and software lies.
We will work together to interpret our insights and make them applicable to decisions and next steps in your work.
Who is this for?
Anyone interested in learning these topics are welcome, but purpose-driven individuals and social impact sector organizations (non-profit, charitable, philanthropic, public sector, or social enterprise communities) will find our Masterclass courses particularly useful and relevant.
