Event description

Description

On Friday, April 7, 2017, the Marquette University Center for Peacemaking will be hosting the University’s first symposium on nonviolent peacemaking. This one-day interdisciplinary symposium will allow students, faculty, and the wider community to take part in an ongoing international dialogue about the Catholic Church’s approach to peacemaking and nonviolence.

In April of 2016, The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and Pax Christi International hosted a conference at The Vatican titled “Nonviolence and Just Peace: Contributing to the Catholic Understanding of and Commitment to Nonviolence.” As a response to this international conference, we plan to keep the conversation going through a campus-wide interdisciplinary symposium.

The symposium will feature contributions from participants in the Rome conference, as well as Marquette University faculty and students.

Speakers will include:

  • Maria Stephan, Ph.D. - Senior Policy Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP)
  • Terrence Rynne, Ph.D. – Co-Founder of the Center for Peacemaking and Instructor in Theology at Marquette University Ken Butigan, Ph.D- Executive Director of Pace e Bene and Senior Professional Lecturer at DePaul University (confirmed)
  • Mel Duncan, Founding Director, Director of Advocacy & Outreach, Nonviolent Peaceforce
  • Francisco de Roux, SJ, former Provincial of the Jesuits in Colombia

This symposium will give Marquette students and other participants the opportunity to develop research connected to a topic that is relevant to their area of studies. In particular, we will engage students and scholars in Peace Studies, Social Welfare and Justice, Theological and Philosophical ethics, and International Affairs.
