Event description
A symposium on language reclamation strategies, featuring talks from local Indigenous scholars and community members.

About this Event

We are happy to invite you to the first Symposium on the Indigenous Language Communities of the Californias (SILCC) at UC San Diego. UN declared 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IYIL), with the message “Indigenous languages matter for development, peace building and reconciliation”. With this as a backdrop, join us to learn about the linguistic heritage of our region, enjoy complimentary lunch, and connect with colleagues, scholars in the local academic institutions and members from the local tribal communities.

The symposium will feature presentations by Native American scholars and local community members, centering on indigenous perspectives about the current status of languages of the region and efforts underway to preserve and reclaim them for future generations. Following the presentations there will be a panel discussion about how to create lasting impacts of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, based on the perspectives of the Kumeyaay, Kumiai, Cahuilla, Cupeño and Luiseño tribal communities of Southern California and Baja California and their experiences with language reclamation work in their communities.

The symposium is complimentary and open to the public.
