Event description

Description

1968 was a year of monumental change: The Tet Offensive, bombing halts, and the election of President Richard M. Nixon. American attitudes at this point in the Vietnam War had grown sour and impatient, and the newly-elected Republican President promised to return the United States to its former glory and security. But by 1971, there was still no palpable progress with his détente-driven Vietnamization policy. The Northern Vietnamese saw pursuing peace talks as pointless, and a total Northern military victory seemed within reach. Finally, President Nixon called upon the United States Air Force to save face with a bombing campaign called Operation LINEBACKER II. Over eleven days, from December 18 through 29, 1972, over twenty thousand tons of ordnance rained down upon the Hanoi-Haiphong area in North Vietnam, ultimately destroying the communists' ability to wage war. Panelists will discuss their personal involvement in this campaign and assess the air war in Vietnam.

This event allows registration for a free symposium and is open to the public. Advance reservation is required. This registration option is for the public (not honored guests, spouses, or speakers). Please print your ticket from EventBrite and bring it with you for admission.

Symposium Information: The Strategy Alternatives Consortium (SAC) at LSU in Shreveport will host a symposium on Saturday, December 2nd to honor those who participated in Operation LINEBACKER II, the last air campaign of the Vietnam War. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the campaign. Panelists will set the stage for U.S. involvement in the conflict, discuss their personal experiences, and assess the lessons that the Air Force learned from the American conflict in Vietnam. The symposium will be held at the LSUS University Center Theater from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and is free to the public. Doors will open at 8:00 a.m. for registration. The event begins promptly at 8:30. Seating is limited and a ticket is required to attend.
