Event description
Session I of the Symposium on Innovative Financing for NCDs: pathways to unlocking catalytic finance for building partnerships

About this Event

The gap in public and private health financing is particularly jarring for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), SDG 3.4, where there is an increased economic burden for health. There is a minimum of $8B private sector investment needed and a $7.5B per year shortfall. Traditional and alternative financing models have not been sufficiently explored to provide evidence for their fitness for purpose for addressing the NCDs burden, and the information flow between the finance community and the public sector remains low.

Confirmed speakers include the below and country Governments, and Implementing agencies. Introductory remarks and moderation by Dr. Andrea Feigl, Founder and Executive Director of the Health Finance Institute.

  • Arnaud Bernaert, Senior Director, Head of Global Health and Healthcare Industries, World Economic Forum
  • Gene Bukhman, Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, Senior Health and Policy Advisor on NCDs at Partners in Health
  • Dr Margaret Agama-Anyetei, Head of Division, Health and Population, African Union
  • Ann Aerts, Head of the Novartis Foundation
  • Christoph Benn, Director for Global Health Diplomacy, Joep Lange Institute and formerly Executive Board of Global Fund
  • Alan Donnelly, Executive Chairman of Sovereign Strategy, G20 Health and Development Partnership
  • Nick Banatvala, Head of the Secretariat for the United Nations Interagency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of NCDs
  • Anders Nordstrom, Ambassador for Global Health at the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Former Executive Director at SIDA

In May, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are coming together on this significant and timely topic to brainstorm and work towards scaling pathways to close the financing gap for NCDs. Convened by the Health Finance Institute, this symposium provides a unique opportunity to ensure that partners come together to bridge the sectoral and knowledge gaps, particularly those that are usually excluded from this space. Participants include Ministries and government entities, international organizations, academia, pharmaceutical and insurance sector, as well as private finance (detailed agenda at healthfinanceinstitute.org/symposium).

The main objectives of Part I of the Symposium include:

  • Catalyzing and generating political buy-in for NCDs financing and advocacy: Share experiences and lessons learned from policy, advocacy, and partnerships for innovative financing for health and NCDs
  • Highlighting roadblocks for NCDs financing at the country and global level, and offering solutions and possibilities through public-private partnerships
  • Diving deeper into realities of implementation and technical challenges of NCDs financing
  • Discussing the ideas and conceptualization of a global catalytic fund for NCDs
