The El Camino Youth Symphony presents a fabulous program featuring works by Dvorak, Sibelius, and Rachmaninoff as well as two talented student soloists: pianist Leyla Kabuli and violinist Roger Sun. Maestro Jindong Cai conducts!

RACHMANINOFF Symphonic Dances

Leyla Kabuli is a scholarship student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College Division, and the pianist of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. She is a 2017 and 2016 National YoungArts winner and a Chopin Foundation Scholarship recipient. She won first prizes in international competitions, including Los Angeles Young Musicians, American Protégé, Wildflower Young Artist, and eMuse. Other international prizes include second prize and Ostlund award in Enkor, third prize in Virginia Waring, second prize in World Pianist Invitational, best transcription and audience prizes in Seattle. She also won first prizes in Pacific Musical Society, MTAC solo and concerto, CAPMT honors and contemporary, Kruschke, Mindell, Ghiglieri, Classical Masters, East Bay, Berkeley Etude Club, US Open, and top prizes in CMTANC, McKee, Zeiter, SF Chopin, regional MTNA Piano Duet competitions.

Leyla received San Francisco’s Noontime Concerts 2016 Helen von Ammon Emerging Artist award. She performed with Ensemble SF as their student winner, and as a soloist with the Waring Orchestra in 2015. After her performance on NPR’s From the Top was broadcast nationwide in 2016, she collaborated on a music video with them to raise awareness for refugees. She enjoys chamber music and collaborative piano, and plays bassoon and violin.

Roger Sun, seventeen, is currently a junior at Dougherty Valley High School. He began learning violin at the age of 6 with his mother, Aimei Liu. Some of Roger’s accomplishments include: 1st prize winner of the Boulder Youth Symphony Concerto Competition in 2010 (where he played a solo with the orchestra), winner of the Contra Costa String Association String Competition in 2012 & 2015, winner of U.S.Open Music Competition in 2014, 2015, and 2016, 1st prize winner of DVC Young  Artist String Competition in 2014 & 2016, 2nd prize winner of American Protégé international String & Piano Competition in 2015, 2016 and 2017, 1st prize winner of Silicon Valley International Art Competition in 2015, winner of ECYS Concerto Competition in 2016, grand prize winner of the International Music & Arts Society 5th Annual Talented Young Musician Olympia Competition, and also grand prize winner for the Chamber Music category in 2017. Roger has also been invited five times to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Roger first joined El Camino Youth Symphony Senior Orchestra when he was 12 years old, being one of the youngest members in the orchestra, and now serves as the Co-Concertmaster of ECYS. Currently Roger is studying violin with Mr. Ryan Chen. In his spare time, Roger serves at a retirement community where he performs for senior citizens. In addition to music, Roger loves reading, politics, and playing basketball.

450 K-12 students from the San Francisco Bay Area train and perform in El Camino Youth Symphony orchestras and ensembles, led by the award-winning, internationally acclaimed Senior Symphony Orchestra.
