Description

Please join us for our first edition of Swingtober fest: a celebration of dance, music and cuture!

We've got a really fun day packed for y'all, hosted at the beautiful Happyland Theater!

Here's a breakdown of the day:
* 4pm: showing of Buckjumping
Buckjumping takes the pulse of present day New Orleans by turning to its dancers, the men and women who embody the rhythm of the city and prove it on the streets every chance they get. This 70 minute documentary film follows six different New Orleans communities as they exalt in their distinct form of dance.

* 6pm: Dance class with Sarah Swing Dancing and Cameron Lovejoy, sponsored by Dance Quarter.
Sarah St Ores is a swing dance instructor living in New Orleans, LA. Hailing from the great Florida panhandle and is one of those people we love to hate for finding swing dancing at a young age. She’s been in the game since middle school. Trailblazer? Nerd? Potato, Pot-AH-to. She’s elegant and natural in her movement and teaches with humor and compassion.

* 7pm: Live music and dancing with Sabertooth Swing
Sabertooth Swing offers a variety of fun, engaging swing-era songs with a focus on bringing in surprising & fresh material and maintaining an energy that is likely to make you want to tap your toes and shuffle your feet. The Sabertooth cats aim to reconnect jazz to its original party-filled spirit, intended for long nights of dancing and popular gathering.

* 8:15pm: Dance contest, hosted by Darold Alexander
Darold has been all around town promoting swing dancing, teaching, and performing on both tap and vocals. He recently hosted the first New Orleans Jazz Band Brawl. He sure will make our dance contest fun and popping!

* 8:30pm: Dance performance by Les ReBelles NOLA
Through dance, Les Rebelles celebrate the historic fight for women’s rights by visiting the different eras when significant progress was made towards “La Liberation de la Femme”. Think 1920’s flapper, 1960’s go-go, turn of the century French Cancan, etc… All that, with a French twist! Les ReBelles are both a performance groupe and a Mardi Gras tradition by marching in Krewe Bohème.

* 9pm: Live music and dancing with Bon Bon Vivant
Bon Bon Vivant is an Indie-Gypsy/New Orleans band playing original bawdy gypsy swing, dark ballads and uptempo indie rock/dance music. Front-woman Abigail Cosio's songwriting is as fierce as it is heartbreaking, often compared to Amy Winehouse, Melody Gardot and Florence and the Machine. BBV pays homage to the New Orleans music tradition while infusing an indie/punk edge, attracting both swing dancers and indie-rock concert goers alike.
