About this event

From underground speakeasies of the 1920s to neon nightspots of the 1940s, Manhattan's West 52nd Street — better known as Swing Street — was once the most active block of jazz clubs in New York City. But how did a humble stretch of brownstones become a bustling stage for jazz in the '30s and '40s? And what would it have been like to spend an evening on the street, listening to jazz legends like Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, and Coleman Hawkins? From small band swing to bebop, it's time to explore the new sounds of Swing Street and the unlikely rise of its famous clubs that kept on swingin' from dusk until dawn.

Join New York Adventure Club for the second of a two-part series on the legacy of New York City's Swing Street, a former collection of narrow basement clubs on 52nd street between 5th and 6th Avenues in Midtown Manhattan that featured some of the world's top jazz artists on a nightly basis between the 1930s and '40s.

Led by DJ and jazz historian Matthew “Fat Cat” Rivera, Part II of this virtual historical presentation and listening party featuring rare 78 RPM jazz records will include:

  • The hotbed of jazz on 52nd Street between the early to late '40s
  • An introduction to the later clubs on "the street" like the Three Deuces and Jimmy Ryans
  • A discussion of the vast range of jazz styles, from BeBop to the New Orleans Revival, that flourished on 52nd street during the '40s
  • A look at rare photographs, film footage, newspapers, and other material rarely assembled for public display
  • A listen to portions of rare original recordings of jazz artists like Coleman Hawkins, Art Tatum and Charlie Parker, who kept 52nd street swinging during and after the war

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with DJ Fat Cat — any and all questions about Swing Street are welcomed and encouraged!
