Got sugar cravings? This tour of two Ferry Plaza Farmers Market artisan businesses is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. We’ll tour Downtown Bakery and make our own pastries, and see how gelato is made at Cremeux Ex Machina. And we’ll even meet the cows that produce the milk in the gelato.
At Downtown Bakery in Healdsburg, owner Kathleen Stewart will show us around the full-service bakery that specializes in using sustainable ingredients. She will lead a class in which everyone will make their own baby apple galette. We’ll eat lunch made with farmers market ingredients. There will also be time to walk around and browse Healdsburg’s small shops and cafes.
Our second stop will be Cremeux Ex Machina in Petaluma, where Jenny Ko and Alex Saneski make California-style sorbetti and gelati from seasonal produce. The facility is located at Chileno Valley Jersey Dairy, which is also the source of the milk in their products. Our group will enjoy a tour of their gelato-making facility, demonstration, and tasting, as well as a tour of the dairy farm with farmer John Taverna, and an opportunity to meet the Jersey calves.
The tour is geared toward adults. Young people who are interested in attending with their guardians and who are likely to enjoy the tour without causing disruption are welcome. Please use your discretion and call if you have questions.
We are not able to offer refunds once you purchase a ticket.
Where to meet: Meet at the Ferry Building (in the front, south side of the clocktower). Be there by 8:40 am; we leave at 9 am. Please be prompt! We cannot wait for stragglers.
Note: The weather could be very dry and hot, or it could be cool and windy. We will spend time both outdoors and indoors. Please wear closed-toed, sturdy shoes.
What to bring: Water bottle, sun protection, layered clothing, and a hat. Also consider bringing snacks, a camera, a book or other entertainment for the bus, and cash for purchases.
We will do our best to return by 5:30 pm, but traffic conditions can be unpredictable and we can't guarantee punctual arrival.
